Side Hustles for OTs: The One That Actually Uses Your Degree

The usual options (and why they cap out)

Here's what shows up when OTs go looking for extra income.

• PRN shifts. More hours for the same ceiling. You're still trading time for dollars, just on a weekend now.
• Selling on Etsy or Teachers Pay Teachers. Fun, but you're building a store that needs constant new products to bring in real money.
• An online course you record once. Sounds great, until you realize a course with no audience and no plan just sits there.
• Affiliate offers or MLMs. You're promoting someone else's thing and hoping for a small cut.

None of these are bad. But notice the pattern.

Every one of them either caps out at more hours, or asks you to build something completely outside your actual skill set.

There's a better rung on that ladder. And it's the one most OTs walk right past.

Why coaching, specifically for an OT

Here's the truth I wish someone had told me sooner. You already coach all day.

Think about what you do in a session.

You assess where someone is. You set a goal with them. You meet them exactly where they are. You break a big outcome into doable steps. Then you get them to take action and follow through.

That is coaching.

The only thing that changes is who you point those skills at.

And here's the part most OTs miss: you get to choose.

You are not locked into coaching the same patients you see now. You could coach other professionals. New moms. Adults with anxiety. People who want to declutter their home. Parents and caregivers who need a real plan.

You pick the person and the problem you actually want to help with.

And you don't have to be the top expert in the world to do it. You just have to be 1 or 2 steps ahead of the person you're helping.

That's it.

You've spent years being way more than 1 or 2 steps ahead of the people you serve. The skill is already yours. You'd just be using it on your own terms.
